Re: Left Field by Committee?
I voted for Baldelli and Wilkerson. I love Baldelli's upside, and voted Wilkerson because he could really be had on the cheap, mayabe even a minor league deal, and could potentially revive his career hitting at the GABP.
Edit: I just read Wilkerson hits lefties better than righties, but that doesn't change my vote. I'd still love to see the Reds add him.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
I say bring back Craig Wilson to face LHP.
He's tan, rested, and ready to go!
Re: Left Field by Committee?
I like the way you set up the poll. However I think it's too soon to believe that we won't still get a Dye, Atkins or the like.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
Baldelli (.296/.347/.494)/Gross (.256/.352/.434) is probably obtainable for little pain and both are plus defenders that give the current roster flexibility and don't hamstring the future while providing useful talent for the future.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
I like a Wilkerson/Michaels tandem.
Cheap, and crudely effective.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
No love for Russell Branyan to face RHP as part of the platoon?
If I can't have Russell, give me Hinske and Gomes

Branyan signed elsewhere. I believe it was Seattle.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
I like RedsManRick's picks the best so far: Edmonds and Baldelli. You could tell either of them that he would be the starting center fielder, even if it worked out to Chris Dickerson getting a lot of the playing time.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
How about George Foster, Hal Mcrae and Ken Griffey?

The problem with that is that Dusty would use all three of those players over Jay Bruce and bat McRae, Griffey, and Foster as the first, second, and third hitters in the lineup out of respect.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
It would cost as much to get two guys to cover left as it would to get someone who is actually good.
Re: Left Field by Committee?
Luis Gonzalez is still in the league?

1. If the one good guy is injured, you're up Crap Creek without a paddle.
2. The platoon players typically sign much shorter deals, making their contracts less risky.
3. Having more options gives you a stronger bench and helps with planning for the game.
4. If the "good" player is a free agent, he might cost a draft pick.

Two piles of fertilizer do not make one pile of gold. :p:
