Here's how you "fix" the deadline: allow the trading of draft picks.

Pirates Acquire Robert Andino

Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread
When is the trade deadline? I just thought of a way for us to get Bonds and Griffey and we really wouldn't have to give up too much.

I'm talking about the "real" picks.
Astros will have the first pick next year, they should be able to trade it.

Has this ever been seriously considered by MLB? Interesting idea.
Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread
I have an idea for the deadline. Let's move it back to whenever the waiver deadline is and just not have a waiver deadline. With the new wild card the way it is, it is killing the trade deadline.

I have never understood why the trading deadline is July 31 but you still have a waiver deadline of Aug 31. Make the trading deadline Aug 31st and you don'y have all this waiver mess.
Re: Official Trade Deadline Thread
An unintended consequence of moving the deadline closer to the end of the season is more teams could actually pull closer and decide not to sell.
Also, the player getting traded has even less impact for the new team, so it becomes less worth it to trade a player.
Here's a thought, perhaps the competitive balance in baseball is coming on. Teams have hope. It's almost like the NFL, no trades happen.
