George Grande did the first Sportscenter, he's famous in his own sort of way. He did less than 20 years of broadcasting however, working with the Yankees and Cardinals before the Reds. Scully has done 60+ years with the same team. Scully is more creative and descriptive than Grande, who was more of a videogame announcer, same old lines but always paying attention and doing its job. Scully is a legend because he's great and has been for a long time.
I have been a Reds fan for over 50 years. I have listened to Wait Hoit, Harry Carrie, Marty and Joe and many others, but I tell you what, Vince Scully is in a league of his own. He is better at his craft than any living human. He is the Motsart, the Picasso, the Lerando DeVinchi of baseball broadcasting. I lived in California for about 4 years and I use to listen to Dogger games just to hear Vin Schully (and I hate the Doggers) but Vin was an absolute joy to listen to. I was listening the night Sandy Kofax pitched a perfect game. The way Vin Schully announced that game was a masterpiece. That game with Vin Schully should be saved in baseball achrives for future generatinns to enjoy. Vin Schully is the greatest that has ever been and we blessed to say we heard him.
I would rather listen to George Grande read War and Peace than listen to two minutes of Paul Keels. That said I agree Vin Scully is a legend, as is Marty, and my favorite Bob Uecker. Not just saying this because I detest the Cardinals, but I listened to a radio broadcast of a St. Louis game a couple weeks ago, and it was god awful.
Vin Scully is my favorite regardless of sport. He is a story teller, which is so awesome. I don't know where he gets his info from, but it is awesome. Also, if you ever noticed, Scully hardly ever criticizes an umpires call. If the ump calls him out, he is out. It is very refreshing in today's society. Being an ump is a hard job and the same as any other profession, today's society tends to criticize anyone in authority.
Regardless, it makes the game more enjoyable when he doesn't spend time bashing the umpires about missed calls. But what I like most about him is his ability to tell a story.
I'm beginning to get that same feeling about Kelch as well, with his leather lungs.
I don't care who's announcing as long as they're talking about the baseball game
