I'd go to Chapman first. You can always go back to Marshall if Chapman can't handle it. Might as well do it now and see how he does, it's the only way to justify him in the bullpen, IMO.

Chapman will be more valuable as a starter this season, even if he doesn't make the majors until later in the year, than as a closer.
Marshall - closer, Bray setup, Chapman extra starter in AAA is more valuable than:
Chapman - closer, Marshall setup man, no extra starter in AAA
Re: Reds Sign Ryan Madson
One more thing to consider. Chapman had difficulty throwing back to back days. I doubt he's ready to be a closer.

Francis isn't your extra starter?

Gut feeling, or is this what you're hearing? Would be a shame.
Re: Reds Sign Ryan Madson
I'd be amazed if Chapman were named closer.
He hasn't shown the consistency, the ability to pitch on consecutive days, or the control to be a closer.
I can see Chapman setting up. But as closer, I think Marshall is the clearcut choice to replace Madson if he misses time.

He's shown more than once that he's well connected, which is why i asked if that is what he's hearing, or if that is just his gut instinct.

He has, but the only way Madson is heading towards TJ would be to be checked out by Kremchek (sp?), which (correct me if I'm wrong) I have not seen reported anywhere.
He may turn out to be right, but at this point, that has to just be a pure guess.
Re: Reds Sign Ryan Madson
Well that would assume that the press would know quicker than cinreds21. That may or may not be the case, certainly there are those in the organization, which cinreds may be in contact with, that would know well in advance of the press.
The non doctor in me wonders if there are clear cut signs that a guy has a torn ligament in his elbow before he gets scoped. He may not need to see Doctor K for some trainers to feel 90% certain he's got a torn ligament of some sort. Speculation, but something like would be spread around the club house faster than the press would know.

The insider has a track record guys, I'm giving him the benefit here. Though I hope he doesn't know what he is talking about here. :)
