Pretty yawn inducing trade.

Yes, but Ludwick had most of the season left to turn it around (which he did). Cairo has been about as non-productive as it gets in the role he'll very likely occupy the rest of the season (if he remains on the team). With far better options available (Lyle Overbay, even Xavier Paul), I don't see any reason to continue giving Cairo at bats while we're in a pennant race.
As I previously stated, I genuinely do appreciate all Cairo's provided the club. Offer him a job within the organization and go with someone who's more likely to help us the rest of the year.

I'm not saying the Reds should stay indebted to Cairo, nor should they give him a free pass the entire season. But he hasn't even cracked 100 plate appearances, so that has to be considered before deciding whether there are better, available options to replace him with. If the Reds can find an upgrade, by all means they should do it. But the others they've tried, Mike Constanzo comes to mind, certainly were not it.
This will all sort out after the deadline. Other than starters, the only possible cuts from the position players are Cairo and Paul. Heisey could get traded, but won't be cut, nor will Valdez or Mes obviously.
Votto's return will require somebody to go, any addition (Overbay, etc.) will require a second player to go.
So we'll know soon enough.

Morosi tweeting Reds are after Overbay

The guy has been a solid role player the last couple of years. They're going to give him plenty of time before making a rash decision. Assignments for guys of his experience aren't something you do without plenty of consideration.
It's a tough one for me too because I've witnessed Cairo have some really big hits for this team the last couple of years, and fill in well for Rolen. It's a shame he has struggled this year.
He is one of the most popular players in the clubhouse. If released, it could be a huge negative on team chemistry.
But clearly, from a baseball standpoint, Cairo looks done at the plate, and we have other guys who can play the same backup role.
I think they have to roll the dice and let him go. If no team picks him up, play him every day at Louisville and see if his bat comes back.

MLB Trade rumors say Johnson and Soto traded in separate deals.
This is too bad because the Cubs are playing the Bucs two more games. Dempster, Soto, Johnson will be gone, maybe others too. Too bad Cubs couldn't wait two days to sell.

Re: 7/30/12 - Reds vs Padres
Padres don't have a terrible lineup at all. Don't know about their pitching, haven't followed them much.
Doing a decent job of building a lineup, though.

They have Jason Marquis and Kip Wells in their rotation, and previously featured Jeff Suppan in it as well this year.
