I enjoy eating them, but I got one of the worst ankle sprains I've ever had while out mushroom-hunting with my dad as a teenager. He never took me mushroom-hunting again after that.
I go hunting every year but don't eat them. It's all in the chase.
I remember when I was in college that the spring was a good time for mushrooms.
I'd love to go sometime. I've never had morels but I'm a huge fungus fan. I'd be scared of picking something toxic. I'll need someone to teach me.
There are some very good guides with color pictures on the internet. Do a search, odds are some university or department of natural resources has information on it, that is pertinent to you. A quick google search of "South Carolina wild mushrooms guides" yielded plenty of good results.
Here is a link that looks good

Jeez I am so jealous! I miss good morels! I have no idea where to look around here that isn't already guarded by a rabid mushroom-er with a shotgun! :P I've never been a good hunter anyway--I can walk right by them while my BIL can practically smell them out!
The next few weeks around here the local flea market guys will do a booming business of selling morels for upwards onto $30-40 a pound. (seriously!)
Dude. Yeah, man - sweet.
Seems I'm the only one in our area that can't find them this season. Been out like 5 times and found maybe 100 combined.
