it's exciting to build something and then see the results of your effort and work. You're also seeing guys that want to come to the Reds. Guys on other teams are saying 'Man, I wish I was there because you guys are having fun, working hard and look like a team. Then it gets easier to sign guys. Then it gets easier to re-sign guys.

I would love to see this list of players. Any non-marginal MLB players on it?

Re: Reds.com Q&A with Dusty
I think if you're going to bash Dusty for his baseball opinions, you should at least give him credit for being a player's coach. I, for one, think he's a good guy to have with a young team. Yeah, he doesn't like walks, I get that. But he does seem to have a lot of good ideas about how to be a professional. Young players (read: young people) need that.

I thought that Baker did a good job with his responses to this Q&A. I hope that he continues to with his other intereviews and responses as the season goes forward.

If you don't like walks, I don't see how you're good for young players. In the article, he mentions throwing quality strikes and pitching effectively, yet he thinks walks are overrated for his hitters.
If it's bad for your pitchers to give up walks, then it's good for your hitters to get them.
Re: Reds.com Q&A with Dusty
I still think people are reading too much into that "not liking walks" thing. Is there anybody here who really thinks Dusty thinks a walk for his hitter is a bad thing? I can understand him thinking that walks are overrated. They are, to a large extent. Once OBP got into everybody's mindset, walks get talked about more than just about anything. Sorry guys, but hits are STILL better than walks. I know that you all know that, but with all of the stressing of the importance of walks that's been going on the past few years, it can appear that it's nearly the MOST important aspect of hitting. Exaggerated, sure. But appearances usually are. Nobody wants our hitters swinging at bad pitches. But we also don't want them up there being passive and LOOKING for walks. You want them up there being aggressive. Aggressive IN THE ZONE. There are lots of things that are quotes of Dustys' that have been taken either out of context or just not expanded upon to explain what he meant by the short sound byte. And people who don't like Dusty...they POUNCE on those sound-bytes. Regardless of the logic or lack of logic behind the quote.
Re: Reds.com Q&A with Dusty
It's not a question of hits being better than walks- the argument should not be framed that way.

Yeah......wait hits are better than walks? When Bill James was given the Ten Commandments I thought that one said: "Walks matter more than anything else in baseball. Let it be written, so let it be done." Right?

I agree. But my point is that Dusty's getting bashed (not here right now, just usually) for not putting an emphasis on walks, or more specifically for that one specific quote he made in the past. Basically, taking what he said once and turning it on its head to make him look bad regardless of what the meaning behind the quote was or not. There's not a person in baseball that doesn't understand the value of a walk and doesn't like when their player draws one. Dusty included...regardless of the specific words from that old quote.

Very true, grasshopper. This is a truly complicated game and a constant balance is needed. Look what he's saying this year to Phillips: be more selective, take a walk, etc. I think I agree with those who cut it down to its simplest form - avoid outs.

No....those are Chip's Hot Stove reports.

There's no context to defend Baker on the quote. He was basically saying that if a slow hitter gets a walk, they clog up the basepaths. What if a slow hitter gets a single?
The logic is so poor in a matter of words, that he deserves every single piece of criticism he gets for saying what he said.

I don't think you'll find much argument there. Just easier said than done I'm afraid. :O)
