Took the words right out of my mouth, haha. They've lost 8 in a row and we're STILL behind them.
Re: So the Pirates really suck
I have absolutely zero sympathy and zero warm spot for the Pirates. They're from Pittsburgh and they're all tremendously obnoxious Steelers and Penguins fans who flaunt their Super Bowls and Stanley Cups in your face. They're hardly suffering.
May the Pirates lose for another two decades!

Haha, hey, I'm a Buckeyes fan, and I flaunt their success, so I don't fault them one bit. I sat in that crowd for two days and only ran into one obnoxious person, and he was drunk out of his mind and had people with him telling him to shut up.
I understand they've had success in other sports, but it's not the same as baseball, in my eyes anyways. The Pirates are a great franchise historically, and it'd be great for our division if they could rise from the ashes.

The thing that would be great for our division is if the Reds could quit spinning their wheels, rise up and seize control of if for the next half-decade or so. It's time.

I'm not arguing that point one bit my friend. But I see little point in hating the city of Pittsburgh solely because our own sports teams suck. I fostered much the same disdain until I went to the city to see a few games and tour the town. An absolutely beautiful city, and probably one of the nicest cities in America. My cousin was walking on the street and sneezed, and someone walking by in a suit carrying a suitcase said "Bless you!" I MEAN C'MON! IN A MAJOR CITY! If you were to sneeze around 5 feet of someone in NYC they'd put you put you in the Million Dollar Dream and put you out (sorry for the lame 1980s wrestling reference, couldn't help it).
Re: So the Pirates really suck
This Pirates season reminds me of a few Bob Boone teams that were in 1st place through June and faded away. Although I am very impressed with what Clint Hurdle has done with that club, they are still missing some pieces and their young players are still developing. I certainly wouldn't dismiss them.
Re: So the Pirates really suck
They were never a good team. Their "run" was a pure product of luck, and as many of us predicted, their luck has run out.
However, the Reds luck still hasn't turned around, so I've been nothing but dead wrong about them.

I think to call it all luck is to take something away from the players that busted their butt the first half of the season. I knew just as many did that they'd come back to earth. But I don't think that takes away from the level of surprise they supplied all of baseball with the last 3-4 months.

They've been a below average pitching team and a below average hitting team the entire year. They used to have a winning record. Now its evened out. It was luck to be above .500 when you do nothing well (besides being a slightly above average defensive team).

I'm not disagreeing with you Homer. All I'm saying is, they still found a way to win those baseball games early on and exceed expectations in a big way. And they deserve credit for that. Truthfully, I thought this team was going to lose 148 games this season. Did they play above their heads? Certainly. And it was bound to crash back to earth. But I think it's good for the long term health of the franchise to get people back into the park and caring again.
They're still clearly far away from competing with the big boys. But if they continue to invest in the right areas, they stand a fighting chance.

You're right. I'm sorry if I misunderstood your original point. They have been way better this I expected them to be. My comments were construed to the people that thought that their record reflected who they actually were.

The Pirates and Reds are almost the exact same teams historically, same year of founding (1882), same number of world titles, same number of pennants and a minuscule 105 wins total separating the two in that time.
We should root for them now and then, they are us :D

I've always said that if I hadn't been blessed with being a Reds fan, I would have wanted to be a Pirates fan. (The last 19 years notwithstanding.) Historically, it's a club that feels a lot like the Reds.
