Thus far this offseason the Reds have opted for the status quo, which isn't a bad idea with a young, presumably improving core. The NL's top run-scoring offense is intact, save for a shortstop swap, as Cabrera left and backup Paul Janish will get the starting nod; both are offensive lightweights, though Janish did outperform Cabrera last year. Harang, Cincinnati's former Opening Day starter, was too costly to return after he couldn't crack last year's playoff rotation, especially with the emergence of Homer Bailey, Mike Leake and Travis Wood.

What?! The reds don't need to trade for Grienke or Reyes to be the front runners in the division?!?! I'm confused :confused:
The amount of youth and the potential of the core is scary good. Maybe WJ has a plan.

I know that Walt has a plan and I'm willing to bet that winning a single Divison Title and getting swept in the playoff series is the terminus of it. The Reds have the opportunity to build on this past season. They also know that continued improvement is the way to stay on top. I don't believe that stagnation is any part of WJ's grand plan either.
We're not even halfway between the final out agaisnt Philly and the day pitchers and catchers report. There's plenty of offseason left. Despite all the posturing and talk of no money, I still believe that Walt has a significant deal in our future (it may not even have been discussed yet. I'll even bet that two solid deals are more likely than none.
What will they be? I and others here can have fun throwing out dals and discussing targets/partners. But when it comes (and I'm still convinced it will), it will probably catch us as off-guard as the Chapman signing didn't and make us as excited as well.

That would be the second half of last season, where we still had a dangerous offense.

-I have been on record saying I want a few massive trades and blue chippers brought on board in the past, but the more I think about it the less I want it. (obviously if a gift of Grienke is given for pennies then take it but that is besides the point)
I can understand being down on Rolen's 2nd half last year, but how would the status quo from last year not be good enough? Why are we gnashing teeth to trade away youth and increase payroll (that should be spent on LTCs for the homegrown talent)? I think it is reasonable to believe with the current roster as it stands 2011 will be a better team than 2010.

Offensively Rolen/BP should see dips in numbers, but the defense will still be elite. With the possible improvement of the rotation, just due to the aging process, the Reds will be a better team in 2011.
We are no longer in the winter's grasp of the lost decade. Going from a 91 to 94 win team is possible by trading an Alonso/Mesoraco/Leake/Wood, but 2 or 3 years of 94 win is not worth another 3-5 of 85 wins.

Maybe it's just me but I think it's far too early to judge off season moves. It's akin to crowning Division Champions at the All-Star Break.
I believe locking Jay Bruce up for 6 yrs was a brilliant move. Still plenty of time left to make a good move or two or a bad move or two for that matter.

(1) Rolen's power outage occued in the 2nd half of last year, and the offense didn't miss a beat.
(2) Gomes had a OPS of .758 last year, vs. a career average on .790, and after .879 the year before.
(3) An injury to a starter? Volquez, Harang and Bailey went down last year. Then Leake. That's what depth is for. Unlike the Cards who lost Penny and were forced to use garbage.
