Bavasi says Billy Hamilton will play SS in 2011
From a Q&A with the Dayton Daily News:
Quote:
I’ll give you another one to watch for here is Billy Hamilton. He’s got leadoff mentality, great makeup, flies, good defensive player, second or short but you’ll see him at shortstop.

As often as people here ask the question about where Hamilton will play, it might be a good idea to sticky this thread.[/half-kidding]

Wait, so he's going to play SS?
Just kidding.

That's actually why I created a thread for this instead of putting it in another Hamilton related thread. I figured more people would see it this way.

Yeah, but only if 1B doesn't work out.

Well the Reds are thin at 1B, so that makes sense.
Re: Bavasi says Billy Hamilton will play SS in 2011
From John Fay:
Quote:
Bill Doran, the assistant field coordinator, was on my flight out. I asked him about Billy Hamilton, the Reds’ No. 2 prospect. Doran thinks Hamilton can play shortstop.
“He made a lot of improvement from Billings to the Instructional League,” Doran said.

John Fay just tweeted this:
1-2-3 inning for Willis. 6-3 on the last play with BHamilton at SS. Kid's got a gun. #Reds 3, M's 1.

I just thought it was interesting because the only reason why the lone few think he can't stick at SS is because of his arm.
Re: Bavasi says Billy Hamilton will play SS in 2011
interesting, would be great to see him turn into a top notch SS to go w/ the speed and switch hitting ability.
Re: Bavasi says Billy Hamilton will play SS in 2011
Scouting report on Billy Hamilton (@B_Ham_3). He runs fast, he throws hard. Another fine play by the fine young athlete.

Apparently he made a diving catch last inning.

Yeah, I never got the lack of an arm thing. While I only saw limited video of him from last season and the year before from high school, he wasn't out there with a noodle arm.
Re: Bavasi says Billy Hamilton will play SS in 2011
From Jamie Ramsey:
Quote:
Reds uber-prospect Billy Hamilton played today and made a couple of slick defensive plays, including a diving catch at shortstop to save D-Train a base runner. Hamilton also showed off his throwing arm, unleashing a couple of bullets to first base from deep in the hole at short. At the plate, Billy went 0-for-2 but almost beat out a routine infield grounder with his excellent speed.

Re: Bavasi says Billy Hamilton will play SS in 2011
I love the option of having Hamilton at SS. The club has 2 or 3 decent 2B prospects getting closer (2-3 years) to the League - HRod, Puckett, Torreyes - he can always slide back to 2B, if need be. There are always Cozart, Negro, Gregriuos, for SS.

John Fay - Hamilton is the real deal
Quote:
I’m no scout. But I’ve watched a ton of baseball over the years. And, after seeing about four innings of Billy Hamilton at shortstop, I’m ready to declare this kid as the player to watch in the Reds system. His range is unbelievable. He got to a line drive about 15 feet behind second base Tuesday and threw out the runner trying to go from first to third.

Re: Bavasi says Billy Hamilton will play SS in 2011
So, can anyone compare Hamilton, at this stage of his career, with the immortal Travis (Gookie) Dawkins at this same stage.
And, I'm not talking numbers because, to me, numbers don't really tell about the potential when based upon this level. I'm talking personal observation. Compare skill sets. Anyone?
