Re: How long do you use the same razor blade?
One of my hobbies is wetshaving. I use either double edges or straight razors. For DE razors check out Edwin Jagger or Muhle. The blades are cheap and work so much better than the overpriced cartrige garbage.

That's what I'm talkin' about! I would love to eventually go straight razor. Eventually I'll invest in the razor and strop (which seems expensive). Until then, wet shaving with the safety double....(guys really don't know what they are missing until they check out a luxurious cream with a great scent).
Never tried Jahher or Muhle, I like Astra so far and I really don't like Shark.
Re: How long do you use the same razor blade?
My razor last for some time. But it doesn't last long when used to shave ear, shoulder, and back hair. ;)

Jagger and Muhle are brands of DE razors, not blades. ;)
For blades I like Feather, Gillette 7 OClock Yellows and a few others. Astra's aren't bad either, they are made in the same factory as the Gillettes.
You can get some inexpensive straights and strop combos for newbies. There is no need to invest in a super expensive setup until you have your technique down. My first straight razor was an $80 Dovo Special and a $25 strop. If you like vintage straights (some are fantastic, BTW) you can pick up a shave ready straight razor for around $40.
Besides Badger & Blade, you can check out www.straightrazorplace.com as well.

I shave while in the shower.
Re: How long do you use the same razor blade?
I like the Gillette Mach 3's. I read some article on the internet a while back and a guy said he used a razor for several months, maybe a year. He cleaned it by shaving it backwards from the normal shave direction on a poece of denim about 50 times. I started doing it on a wet washcloth and I never tracked the time, but they lasted forever, and i used them for my head, too. I shaved my head in the shower and i don't even think it took a minute.
Re: How long do you use the same razor blade?
There is way too much information in this thread!
I use the Mach III -- one of the good things about it is the blue strip that wears as you use the razor. I usually go about a week past the time there is no more blue strip.

BTW, the power option is definitely the way to go. It provides a much better shaving experience.
This may sound like a silly question....but "the power option?" do these things have a battery in them that vibrate the blades or something?

That little blue strip is there prompt the consumer in to spending more money. With an extra 10 seconds a day you could save a little bit of money. I don't know about you, but I can always appreciate saving money. :)
Fight the planned obsolescence.

The battery is usually "AAA" and in the handle of the razor. Yes, the motor sends out "micro-pulses" to raise hair up and away from the skin so you can shave more closely.

I saw a Clint Eastwood Western with that blade (as a young kid) that made me afraid of them.
Re: How long do you use the same razor blade?
Well I still can't conquer the razor bumps on my neck. I soaked my neck under hot water in the shower for 5 minutes, did the hot towel for another couple minutes, let the shaving cream soak for 5 and waited to shave the irritated area last.. Still got them. They're annoying. Only happens in this one area of my neck to the right of my Adams apple.
Any other ideas? Should I try a different cream? A different razor(that's why I asked about the straight razor)? Or am I resigned to having this irritation for the rest of my days?

I used to get razor bumps too. Now I shave in the shower (using HOT water), use a sensitive skin pre-shave face wash, and sensitive skin shaving cream. After shaving I dry my blade to prolong its use. Seems to have worked.
