4. Ryan Howard (L) 1B
5. Marlon Byrd (R) RF
6. Domonic Brown (L) LF
7. John Mayberry Jr. (R) CF
8. Reid Brignac (L) 3B
9. Cole Hamels (L) P
1. Billy Hamilton (S) CF
2. Brayan Pena (S) C
3. Brandon Phillips (R) 2B
4. Todd Frazier (R) 1B
5. Jay Bruce (L) RF
6. Ryan Ludwick (R) LF

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
I still don't get Frazier at 1st...but, hey, at least it's Cueto day!
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Ugh, Frazer at first. I guess anybody can play first base.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
As was said a few days ago in the game thread, everything was pointing to Mes sitting this game out against Hamels. Pena catches Cueto these days, it's become a regular rotation.
The chain reaction is that Pena isn't available for first base.
So Frazier plays first -- he's the remaining RHB to play first. (Price is correct not to stick a LHB in against Hamels.)
Since Frazier is at first, Santiago is at third.
Mes could have rested Wednesday against a righty and been available today against Hamels. But the rotation seems to be that Mes rests when Cueto pitches. Hope it works out.

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Whatever benefit Cueto gets from Pena catching, he loses with Fraizer playing first and Santiago playing third.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Ugh...we really need this game with Cueto pitching. This lineup is really going to struggle against Hamels who has absolutely dominated the Reds. I guess there isn't much we can swap in against LHP but I hate seeing the bad defense lineup with Santiago in against Hamels. Might be a 1-0 defeat type of night.

I don't know, maybe Johnny has told Price that he really wants to pitch to Pena. Price obviously believes in this dedicated catcher business.
And I'm not that upset about Frazier playing first defensively, it's not optimal, but ok for a game here and there.
However, Mes sitting tonight is very unfortunate. Hamels is tough against the Reds. Mes hits lefties. Santiago and Cozart in the lineup and Mes sitting. Not ideal.

That one run is obviously unearned right?

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Hamels has started 8 games this year and the Phillies have lost 7 of them. Guess the opponent in the game they won?

Not a lot you can do when only 2 players on the roster have an OPS over .705 and one of those is a catcher that can't play every day.
That's almost unbelievable to type. How do we have this many wins running out a lineup with 7 or 8 guys with sub .705 OPS.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
I'm kinda frustrated hearing Price say he's not doing the personal catcher thing, yet he is and because of it, we have 1 of the 2 best players on the roster riding pine.
Fantastic!

Just would like Mes in there against this pitcher. Lefty who usually gives the Reds fits.
Your point is well taken though.

Great pitching and a little bit of luck have something to do with it.

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Not really a tough first inning for Cueto, but he did rack up over 20 pitches.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Just got here. I'll join everyone else this lineup is disappointing and for me Price is quickly becoming disappointing all together.

The whole season has been disappointing.

I've been pretty patient because the injuries have been horrendous and the Reds have stayed close to St. Louis who I think will eventually surpass Milwaukee. That said I'm starting to lose the patience.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
I think Cole Hamels could shut The Reds out pitching right handed.

Only Reds playoff game I've ever been to in my life. I knew going in that Hamels would shut us out and end our season in a sweep. Never feel like it will be a pleasant night when facing Hamels.

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
The Reds took a closer in the first round? Hope he's not another Ryan Wagner...
Although Cingrani did turn out pretty well.

College closer, who they already said will start. He was a starter his whole life until this season.

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
For those that don't like Frazier at 1B, he has played a ton there, and Mesoraco seemed unwilling/unsure of himself at any other spot than catcher right now. Price shouldn't play Lutz or Bernadina at 1B against Hamels.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Cozart reaches on an error.
Edit: They ruled it a hit.

with today´s lineup we have decent defence at 3rd with no offence and more than questionalbe defence at first with good offence...
if he plays lutz on first, we have decent defence on first with no offence and good defence at third with good offence => I´ll take the 2nd opportunity

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Our 8 hitter is bunting to setup Cueto. I'd prefer to see a LH bat against Hamels. What in the hell?
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Why are we giving away outs to a pitcher who chews us up like Hamels? Especially when the pitcher is up next?
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Wait, sacrifice to bring up Cueto. Wtf?
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Year after year this team runs bunting into the ground while sucking at it the entire team.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Great inning by The Reds. 2014 in a nutshell.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Just not smart baseball. IMO, that tells me they have less than zero confidence in Santiago, so if that's the case, why the hell is he playing.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
I don't think Price calls for all these bunts but he needs to talk to these guys about when and when not to bunt.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
You really have to wonder.
The manager has so little confidence in his lineup that he bunts Santiago to set up the pitcher. And yet they are so wedded to this Pena catches Cueto thing that Mesoraco is sitting.
Sorry, I just find this baffling. Maybe the Reds pull this out in a low scoring game and Price looks brilliant. But the Reds can't hit a beach ball into the ocean, yet they find it necessary to sit a potent right handed hitter against Hamels.

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
One out, Utley hit by pitch. Howard up. No score, fourth inning, pitchers duel.
Just in case anyone wanted a recap.
Howard is now ahead in the count 2-1.
Full count on Ryan Howard. Foul.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
I think Santiago was trying to bunt for a hit. I don't think Price is that off his rocker that he would have called for a sacrifice.

HBP shouldn't even count.
I'll never forgive him and the moron ump who let it happen for that phantom HBP in game 2 of the 2010 playoffs.
And Utley is picked off! Hit him then pick him off. I love it.

Price might have because he figures that runs will be very scarce, get the runner to second, maybe something good happens to get a run.
Hard for me to believe Santiago did that on his own, but it's possible.
-
Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
And Cueto hits Marlon Byrd. Huh.

I'm glad we have a new manager this season but after bunting to get to pitcher maybe we another manager change.that was pathetic.

Re: 6/6/2014 Reds vs Phillies
Now two Phils on, another HBP after a walk to Howard.
So two HBP this inning, but Utley got picked off.
Two outs. Two on. No score. Up is Brown. Base hit. Two runs score.
