Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
Otherwise he will never be a big game pitcher as long he continues to completely and humiliatingly meltdown every time calls don't go in his way.
Thoughts?

Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
I wish my head was as screwed up as Latos' when I was his age.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
He got some close to bad calls, and then gave up a grand slam to one of the best players in baseball. It happens--and we wouldn't have even been in this game but for what he did in Game 1.
I think he's going to be on the Reds for a while, and be pretty good.
2013 Rotation: Cueto, Latos, Chapman, Bailey, Arroyo.
Our #4 threw a no-hitter a few weeks ago, and our #5 gave a Martinez-esque dominant playoff performance a few days ago. I think we'll be OK.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
I don't think Latos melted down at all. Sure, he was displeased with a couple of bad calls but I don't think it affected his subsequent pitches. He was throwing solid pitches and the Giants hit them.
It was a matter of the Giants bunching all their hits into one inning while the Reds scattered their hits widely over the last five innings.

Make that next year's Number 1 threw a no-hitter.

Carlos Zambrano melts down.
Mat Latos expresses frustration :)

IDK if his mini-meltdowns affect his performance, but I do know that they don't do him any favors in getting subsequent favorable calls from the umpire that he is showing up. It just makes them want to squeeze him even more. He needs to learn to keep his mouth shut and ignore bad calls because acknowledging the ump will just make it worse.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
Latos is 20 something years old. That's part of it.

I agree with you there. Some umpires are unprofessional enough to allow a player's actions to influence their calls. Smart players won't grant them a reason to make a bad call on purpose.

Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
Latos doesn't deserve nearly the bad rep he gets for having an attitude, IMO. You see a bad attitude, I see passion. There shouldn't have even been a Game 5 for him to pitch in. Game 3 was ours to win and we blew it.

My thoughts exactly
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
So which is it? We love his bulldog tough attitude when he takes the mound when Cueto goes down or we rip him for his attitude when the ump is clearly squeezing him?
Latos is human. He cares. He's young and he'll learn.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
He threw a cookie. He shouldn't have been in the game at that point. Mat Latos is the least of Reds' fans concerns, in my opinion.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
He still reminds me of a young Don Drysdale, with all the fire, and all the stuff.
I'd get in a foxhole with him.

Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
Guys have a bad outing every now and then.
Latos was nails down the stretch and saved our butts in Game 1. Sometimes the offense has to pick a guy up when they're not on their game, but we all know that wasn't happening.
Mat Latos is not a problem at all. He's one of the few things that I still feel really good about after this 3-game meltdown.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
In fairness to Latos, things didn't really start to snowball until Cozart's error. That was huge, and not talked about enough IMO.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
If not for Latos, Reds wouldn't have even made it to a game five. He saved the Reds in game one.
However, Mat agrees that he needs to improve mentally.
Quote:
"Mental improvement," he said. "If I don't let those little things get to me, who knows now that if they score two runs and we win 3-2? Or they score three runs and we win 4-3? It was a mental error on me. I'm not making excuses. I screwed it up. This game is 100 percent on me. I let down my teammates, and that's what bugs me the most right now."

This guy will win a Cy Young with the Reds, IMO.

Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
I like the kid, even though I think tattoos are silly. What would impress me is if this memory spurs him to go into Spring Training readier than he was this year. That, in my opinion, is the mark of an adult major league ball player.

The reds defense in the last three games was like a totally different team than what we had seen most of the year. Not sure why that was, but it was.

Reminiscent of Game 2 in 2010.

You can only call it chocking at this point. To do something that has been out of the norm all year....is letting the situation overwhelm you. Or to be blunt or the opposing teams fans ... chocking.

I think misspelling "choking" is a clear example of choking.

You asked for thoughts. I gave mine.
p.s. - do you see any irony in saying that someone you don't know needs to "get his head on straight," but it's offensive when a similar criticism is directed at you?

Yeah and it was petty and childish. Best left unshared.
The guy has a visible meltdown on the mound and shows up the ump, and proceeds to lose the game by giving up a grand slam immediately after. Why ever would I criticize that, though!

We all have good days and bad days. Can't question the guy's fire. If you're waiting on Superman, he ain't coming.

There's a difference between not having your stuff on a given day, and having a self induced breakdown on the mound. Know any other big game pitchers that lose it on the mound with the game on the line?
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
I think its fair o criticize Latos a bit... It's a situation where giving up a few runs could have been manageable, but giving up 6 was a death sentence. Big game pitchers find a way to minimize the damage there. Latos is 23, has great stuff, and wasn't one bit afraid to take the ball in game one or today in game five. I think he has the goods to someday be the big game stopper... He just isn't quite there yet obviously.
I do think Latos has a few immaturity issues to get past, but as a pitcher I gained a ton if respect for him down the stretch this year and in game one of the series. I'm glad he's a Red.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
Mat himself took the blame for the game today and said it's on him to improve his mental toughness for next season. That doesn't sound like a guy who needs to get his head on straight. It sounds like a guy who's a stand up person that makes no excuses, knows exactly who he is, and that he hopes to make things better next season. I'm proud that he's a Red and I hope to meet him at Redsfest so I can thank him for all the good things he brought to the team this year.

I'm glad he knows it but that's just half the battle. Easier said than done.
Make no mistake I think Mat is probably our best pitcher and will step up 95% of the season as who he is right now. But he needs that extra 5 percent to keep his cool in critical situations.
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
It was bad...but he's a young guy. He'll learn from this, I hope, and that's the most important thing. Like I said in the game thread, those pitches that he lost his cool about weren't totally egregious miscalls. They were borderline at best. That's my biggest problem with the whole thing. Losing your cool is one thing...but losing your cool when it's not really even justified to the point where the whole inning becomes a trainwreck is something else. But this could make him a better pitcher in the long run...if he can learn to harness that raw emotion it can be a very powerful tool. He's got Cy Young talent. Now he just needs a Cy Young head.
But man, it really sucks right now. I hate that we're having this conversation.

Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
Latos needs to go to his happy place when things like that happen.

Latos has been known to be a very self confident ego driven guy. The self awareness he is presenting here is admirable. A little too late for this season but my hope next year he will come as hardened as they come and dominate. He does need a happy place. If he can't demonstrate self control when the game isn't going his way, he will be a wasted talent. Look at Matt Cain. You can't tell if the guy is have a good day or not.

Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
I am glad Mat Latos pitches for the Reds. This will only make him stronger, more determined. How many playoff series did the Big Red Machine blow before getting the job done? Several.
Go Reds!
-
Re: Mat Latos needs to get his head on straight.
The thing we gotta remember is that Latos is still only 24 years old. We know from watching Homer Bailey over the last so many years that Mat may still be a year or two away from putting it all together.
As long as they can stay healthy, the Reds have probably the best rotation (besides the the Nats) in the NL, and will for the next couple years.
