Isringhausen to Audition for Reds (UPDATE: Contract Offered)
Quote:
Appearing on KFNS 590 The Fan with Doug Vaughn this morning, free agent reliever Jason Isringhausen said he has a tentative plan to audition for the Reds tomorrow. Isringhausen added that he expects to hear back from the Cardinals this week and implied that his agent has been in contact with the Yankees, Rays, and Royals.
Isringhausen admitted it'd be weird to pitch for the Reds against the Cardinals this summer as the teams battle for the NL Central. Walt Jocketty's Reds already count Scott Rolen and Russ Springer as organization members. Izzy, of course, tallied 217 saves in seven seasons for the Cards from 2002-08. Isringhausen's last appearance in the Majors came in June of 2009 with the Rays, after which he went down for Tommy John surgery. He said he's currently throwing three times a week and working on a changeup. He expects he'd need a couple of weeks in the minors to get ready.
Really?

Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
Just like Russ Springer, he would be a low-risk, high-reward pickup at RHP. Basically it's whoever he chooses to play for at the pro-rated minimum. I hope he chooses the Reds.
Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
This is what you do when you don't want to trade your prospects. I'm intrigued by the potential move, low risk, possible high reward if Izzy has anything left in the tank.
Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
Think of it this way. Pickup up ex-Cards from the scrap heap is better than picking up ex-Cubs.
Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
This and the Russ Springer addition tells me that Big Bob is not going to approve any additional payroll. Big Bob is not all about winning like he says he is.

But I'll bet his knowledge of attendance and profit figures would blow your mind.
Most owners care far more about the bottom line than they do about winning.

The Reds FO can't be that dumb....he was washed up 2 years ago.
Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
I trust Jocketty. Hopefully this works out to make the pen better.

Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
I have absolutely no problem with this audition. Coming back off of TJ, so who knows? maybe that was why his numbers fell off the cliff beginning in 2008? No harm in taking a look - could be an Arthur Rhodes redux.
Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
In related news, after noticing the great shape that Pedro Borbon was in at the hall of fame ceremony the Reds have offered the 70 year old righthander a tryout.
Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
It's not that Bob is being cheap it's that the asking price in the trade market is too high right now. If you look at it 17 teams think they have a shot at the playoffs. That leaves 13 trade partners subtract the four division teams(Pitt, Hou, Chic, Mil) and the trade market is limited with all wanting the same thing, relief help. Not doubting a trade is made but it will be closer to the deadline. It dose not hurt to look at the guy maybe he will be better than before? Look at Rhodes after he came back from Tommy John surgery better than he was before or just as good.
Re: Isringhausen to Audition for Reds
Russ Springer, now Isringhausen ... um .. why not Weathers?
Look at the stats and compare the three and stormy is better than both. But apparently, Weather "never crossed his mind" according to Walt. But hey, every other reliever who is way more washed up has, apparently.

As a closer yes, but he won't be in that position, and that may mean a bit more ability to get the job done.
