No, he was called up yesterday when Broxton went on the DL, and he was sent down today when Cueto came off the DL.

Thanks. That's fantastic.
Re: Cueto up, Cingrani stays for now
I don't think the Reds have any other viable arms in the pen available in the minors. At this point you bring up the best you have and put them in the pen. Nothing wrong with Cingrani in the pen the rest of the year if needed. Used to be young pitchers got their MLB start in the pen and then moved into the rotation. For the rest of this season it should be no hindrance at all to his starting development to be in the pen. If an injury happens to a starter they could bring up Galarraga. He should be on the 40 man roster than Vilareal anyway.
Re: Cueto up, Cingrani stays for now
The Reds are 5.5 games up in the wildcard. Sean Marshall will be back in 3 weeks. You don't mess with the development/usage of Cingrani, the 6th starter, just to feel good about the bullpen for the next 20 days, IMO. Other guys need to step up.

Pitching out of the pen didn't seem to hinder Adam Wainwright's development/useage in 2006, in fact it helped them win the World Series.

Was Wainwright their 6th starter that season? Maybe he should have been considering how crappy their rotation was outside of Carpenter. Yeah, they won the WS, but I don't think claiming what a team that was 83 games did is some success story. That team got hot at the right time. During the regular season, they were about as average as you can be.
It should also be noted that in the minors, before Wainwright was ever in the Majors, he had three good pitches according to the scouting reports from old BA Handbooks. The same can't be said for Cingrani. Not really an equal comparison.

Agreed with all of that, but the point here is that it didn't hurt Wainwright's development as a starter in the majors to be in the bullpen when that's where the Cardinals felt like they needed him.

Isn't Marshall going to be back in 3-4 weeks?

If he's that fragile that pitching him out of the bullpen for 20 days messes with his development, I would imagine he'll never be a successful pitcher for an extended period of time.

Exactly. Or David Price's when he was briefly used out of the pen by the Rays when he was a rookie. This is all mindless drivel, IMO. Cingrani is one of the 10-best pitchers on the roster (even with everyone healthy) we keep 12 pitchers, even I can do the math there. Cingrani needs to be on this team. His future is obviously as a starter, but he's needed as a reliever right now.

It didn't hurt his development because he probably didn't need any more development. He had three pitches he could throw. He could throw strikes. We can't really say the same thing for Cingrani. Well, he has three pitches but either he or someone in the organization doesn't trust him enough to throw them all with any kind of regularity other than fastball 80%.

David Price also had three pitches he could and would throw. Another not so good comparison.

It is HOPED that he will be. But until he is, it is all just hope.

Three weeks, Doug? If he pulled a hamstring tomorrow and went on the DL for 3 weeks, would that be some huge setback in his development?
