Paul Daugherty says Brandon Phillips is very available
From his morning blog today:
"I’ve also been told that DDBP will be available. That is a mistake, but apparently his personality has become too much for certain high-ups to bear."
I get the feeling his cursing out C. Trent was the last straw, and that his comments about not being paid enough earlier didn't help. So, where do you think he goes?
Re: Paul Daugherty says Brandon Phillips is very available
Not really surprising. I actually like BP, but I think it makes sense to trade him now if they can find a taker. Not sure who would be interested with that contract though. The Angels? The Yanks?

.706 OPS
14:$11M
15:$12M
16:$13M
17:$14M
Gonna have to give somebody away to get that contract off your hands
Re: Paul Daugherty says Brandon Phillips is very available
Worn out his welcome implies selling low. Any trade might have to be for someone else in need of a change of scenery.

Not at all.
That's not a lot of money for a decent starting secondbaseman. Philllips value has always been on defense, and that has stayed strong. All Phillips has to do to earn that contract is average 2.2 WAR a season. This year was his worst WAR as a Red, and it was 2.6.
After Cano signs, Phillip will look like a bargain.

A number of big markets teams have a huge need for a 2B. Phillips has enough cache that he can be moved for decent value. Those dollars are what they used to be. Many will see 100 RBI's and GG defence.
Re: Paul Daugherty says Brandon Phillips is very available
Assuming he does get moved it has to be for a 2nd baseman right? There isn't anyone in the reds system who can play 2nd everyday in 2014 unless I'm missing someone.

The Angels are looking to trade Trumbo because he'll cost too much in arbitration. They won't look to take on that contract.
The Yanks might, but I remember reading they want to stay under the 179 million luxury tax. They might if they miss out on Cano.
757690-I believe his value has been in the combination of power and speed, something you don't always get from a 2nd baseman. His doubles were down this year, and he only had 5 steals as well. Teams will be looking at the offensive value he can provide.
Re: Paul Daugherty says Brandon Phillips is very available
No surprise on this one.
For a team with budget constraints, the fat needs to be trimmed.
I think he ends up meeting the 2.2 WAR benchmark on his deal, though I wouldn't be shocked if he doesn't get there. But in the Reds case, there are guys you would rather spend the big bucks on.

This is why the Reds are in on Alexander Guerrero.

Not at all. A 2B would certainly have to be acquired, but totally not necessary in a BP deal.

Exactly what I was going to say. If BP is on the block, then Walt must feel we are in very good standing with Guerrero.

I doubt it.
If BP is available it's because of one thing and one thing only.
This is a conservative ownership group annoyed with BP's behavior, particularly the rant against the beat reporter.
It was said Bob C was upset with Dusty's handling of that situation, so it was definitely on ownership's screen.
It's likely nothing to do with Guerrero or OBP or even the contract IMO.
Re: Paul Daugherty says Brandon Phillips is very available
Would hate to see him go, but I think they should be open-minded to just about anything short of dealing starting pitching.

Who is Alexander Gurerro?
