Brandon Claussen

From Rotoworld per Cincinnati Post:

Brandon Claussen (shoulder) was scratched from his scheduled rehab start at Triple-A Louisville on Monday night because of a sore back.

Clasusen had his previous outing rained out. The current problem isn't supposed to be serious, but it might prevent him from making it back before the end of the month. Joe Mays will stay in the rotation until Claussen gets back.

At least it's an indication Mays is out of the rotation when he comes back.

Why not bring up Chris Michalak?

8-4 2.61 ERA

35 year old career minor league lefty w/ 47K in 110 IP? Reds are probably better off with Joe Mays.

ETA: Well, I'm selling his 150 career big league innings short by calling him a career minor leaguer, but still -- not the kinda guy that screams "Savior."

ETA pt. 2: He's a lefty, it turns out.

Why not have the relievers pitch? Weather goes the first 2, Mercker the next 2, Standridge the next 2, Bray the 7th, Majic the 8th, Coffey/EE the 9th.

It's a one shot deal and you can also bring up someone from Louisville to take Mays'es roster spot.

I've wondered why that hasn't been done at times.

Of course the bullpen has been so terrible that it's 6 of one, half dozen of the other.

Like I said last week, I've seen zero evidence that Mays will be out of the rotation anytime soon.

The Reds used to do that a few years back -- give their swingman/long reliever a "spot start" of 4-5 innings then have the bullpen take the rest. John Reidling used to be the guy they called on, but Jose Rijo came out of the pen to take spot starts, as did Todd Van Poppel, IIRC.

Anybody but Joe Mays, it's like getting a root canal with no pain killers watching him pitch. I'd rather see Krono on the hill.

What if Mays is Krono?
