Eric Byrnes gets $30 million for 3 years...

The guy is having a career year, but I think the D-Backs overpaid for him. It wasn't too long ago he was a fourth outfielder and well travelled. I just hate to see this kind of money paid to a player of Byrnes' ilk.

You know we complain about 13-16 million possibly going to Dunn.. but deals 3/30 million to Byrnes and 5/100 million to Ichiro kind of makes Dunn look like a bargin or at least on par with league average.

Gary Matthews Jr set the market for this - a mediocre over 30 journeyman has a career year, and that equals a big time payday.

Buy low sell high should be the name of the game. I think Byrnes will continue to perform though. Derek Lee didn't really blossom offensively till a few seasons ago and he had been around for a minute.

Byrnes - 31 years old - .862 in 2007
Ichiro - 33 years old - .831 in 2007
Dunn - 27 years old - .914 in 2007

it's the market. and he will be 32 It's why if the Reds let Dunn walk after this year he is looking at some serious cash.

There is a lot less risk in a 28 year old player than in a 32 year old one.

you would have to think Dunn can get 70M without any problem

They can't afford $3 million raise.. but they can afford $2.5 million for Rheal Cormier and he's not on the roster?

Given the fact that Castellini wants to win I think he pinches his wallet and ponies up the dough. Besides they arn't paying for the debacle that was Eric Milton...

sarcasm was the intent.

marty has been saying all year they can't afford to pick up the option.

I remember back in early 2000 Marty emphatically responding to a caller on "The Reds' Hotstove" that the Reds would not acquire Ken Griffey, Jr. because they simply couldn't afford him.

He was positively emphatic. He was positively wrong. I think he is again positively wrong.

Daugherty seems to hate Dunn, and I for one am getting sick of hearing it.

Yep. Dunn's a keeper IMO.

I hope this signing improves the market for a guy like Freel. I hope he is dangled for 2 reasons 1.) to move his salary 2.) to get a decent young reliever
