I typically avoid Duke basketball games at all costs but I did catch a few minutes of a game earlier this season and there were times when Duke's opponents were charged with fouls that I didn't agree with. I was hoping to see replays on those calls, but I didn't see one replay of those close calls while I was watching. I figured that was because the game was on ESPN and they wouldn't show Duke in a bad light.

Odds that the author attended a university with the word "Chapel" in its title: 88%

While, I don't know about the whole "ruining college basketball" hyperbole, I did go watch the youube clips of the Clemson game, and WOW is all I can say. By watching these clips, it's obvious that it's real part of what the players at Duke are taught. You don't do it that often looking consistently the same unless you're taught. the flops they make on offense are the wrost ones.

Here's a link.

This is so stupid. If you guys don't think that every other coach in the country at almost every level teaches their kids the same thing then you're kidding yourselves. There just aren't youtube clips created about any other team, because most other teams aren't hated as much as Duke. Watch the Duke - Wake Forrest game from last week, Kyle Singler fouled out when the Wake player obviously flopped. Everyone's taught to do it, Duke may spend more time on it or their players may take to it better, but everyone is taught it.

At every level I played basketball I was taught how to "sell" a charge. I remember having practices where we spent 45 mins on just lining up one at a time and taking a charge, including the stupid "AHHHHH!" sound you're supposed to make as you fall down.

I respect Duke, I think things get taken to a ridiculous level with them. When you have tons of success and you're a great program, things like this will happen. It's why the Yankees are hated, the Buckeyes are hated, Notre Dame is hated, etc. etc. etc. Success generates hatred, sadly enough.

The officials used to have the option of calling a technical foul if it was clear that a team was flopping without contact. I actually saw it called in a high school game once on a team that was known for its flops.

If I'm not mistaken, it still IS a rule in the NCAA, tr, it's just never called, unfortunately.

I wouldn't have a problem if the referees decided to start cracking down on it. I just think it's silly to think that it is a Duke specific problem.

And I hardly think it's ruining college basketball (the article only said "hurting" BTW). And the first sentence of the article is just as ridiculous as saying that Duke is ruining college basketball.

Does anyone remember the good old days when college basketball was a wonderful spectator sport?
College basketball is still a pretty wonderful spectator sport, IMO.

Agreed. I saw a couple of wonderful games yesterday with Butler and Drake and Tennessee and Memphis.

As for Duke, if you really believe they are ruining college basketball, ask yourself when was the last time they won the NCAA title and when was the last time they have been to a Final Four.

I find this article by Stewart Mandel to be a far better read regarding Duke.

I remember a very undersized Indiana Hoosiers team in 2002 beat Duke on their road to the championship game. While that game could've been spoiled by a foul called at the end of the game by the Hoosiers, there was a huge upset.

What a great game that was. As a Hoosier fan (and at the time I wasn't yet a fan of Duke) I remember being so pissed at Dane Fife. I didn't understand why he didn't just let him shoot.
