Re: Minor League FA Signings- 2008-09 Offseason
Pelland's my boy, my sleeper pick three years in a row. You do not give up on LH pitcher with his stuff.
Re: Minor League FA Signings- 2008-09 Offseason
Tyler Pelland is retiring from baseball.

I'll need more than a first post for proof. Not saying it isn't true, just that if it were, dougdirt would likely be able to confirm. I'll wait on him for that.

Already sent out an email to one of my Reds guys.... simply a waiting game now.

Wow, was hoping he had finally turned a corner a bit and would be able to finally make it this season.

That sucks. I was holding out hope he could still develop into a solid lefty out of the pen.
Re: Minor League FA Signings- 2008-09 Offseason
He was a marginal prospect to begin with, and now he has to go through shoulder surgery. I wouldn't blame him if he decided to move on. He's still young and has a lot of options.

I guess that depends on what you mean by "marginal" and "to begin with". By my definition he was a good prospect to begin with but due to injuries and control issues has become marginal but if he ever found his control and stayed injury free he could have been a strong LH out of the pen.

What I mean by 'marginal' is that I considered his fate to be that of a AAAA player. Of course, he was capable of more, but I don't think he would have ever been able to accomplish that on account of his lack of control.

He must have agreed with you, or just got fed up. Not being kept on the 40 man or ever being called up, may have been his final straw for this organization. Give him some time to think about it and he may be back, to baseball I mean not necc. the Reds.

Don't get me wrong--I'm rooting for him. I'm just more skeptical of him as a prospect than a lot of other people. Actually, a couple years ago, he was my favorite prospect (as evidenced here)--he just didn't advance as much as I hoped he would. I'm not ruling out the possibility of him ever making an impact in MLB--I just don't see it happening.
Re: Minor League FA Signings- 2008-09 Offseason
I was told he was looking at a long rehab process probably not pitching for 18 months and he was taken off the 40 man roster so it was a big pay cut. He plans on using his college scholarship that he received in his contract.
Re: Minor League FA Signings- 2008-09 Offseason
I do hope that he gets that fire to give it another shot.

Pelland was always considered a fairly bright kid, which is probably why he got that scholarship put into his contract in the first place.
