This team will NEVER be "a Matt Holliday away from the playoffs"
Sorry but I found the latest John Fay article to be pretty annoying.
The Reds are a small market team with middle of the road payroll. They will NEVER be any closer to making a run then they are now. The Reds either need to take the shot, or quit pretending that they are trying. The stars are never going to completely line up for this team. As soon a one piece falls into place, another piece either comes unraveled or becomes unaffordable. "Mortgage our future?!?!" Where has Fay been for the past 15 years?!?! Lemme guess, John... "next year" is the Reds year, right? BE HERE NOW Quote:

Trade a prospect or two away to lock up a good player long term. It doesn't just have to be a 3 month rental. This quote from Kc61 at ORG says it pretty well: Quote:

Yea we probably have a good shot of signing Matt Holliday in a 3 day window when hes set to be the biggest free agent in the off season.

Re: This team will NEVER be "a Matt Holliday away from the playoffs"
Jason Bay and Vladimir Guerrero would be two much more appealing FA OF than Holliday, who is looking enough like a "Coors mirage" to have ESPN and Enquirer articles written about how the market has gone from being potentially 5/$100mm to 3/$30mm. Holliday is OPSing .790 this year, albeit in a pitcher's park. I don't know that he is going to command the $17-20mm/year that some people on this board expect. Bay for sure will command at least that much with the season he is having, and Guerrero will likely make more than Holliday as well.

Vlad has been hurt for a number of years, but my point still stands why would he sign a deal with out negotiating with teams 1st? Would you?
