Phillips responding to tweets...

in a good way. This is one of the cooler stories you'll hear from a big leaguer.

Brandon Phillips takes himself out to 14-year-old's ballgame

I like Brandon Phillips. He seems like a genuinely good guy...

I don't think there is a single other player in baseball that would do this.

He is becoming quite possibly the most fan friendly player in the game.

It's pretty fascinating -- Votto is clearly the best player on the team, but Phillips is the face of the franchise.

I think it's a setup that works very well for both players, given their personalities and talents.

We talk about the gap in young fans....this is marketing gold for the Reds, I hope they recognize it.

I shared my experience at the Dbacks game....where BP was the only player for either team signing autographs after the game.....and the only thing stopping him was when they finally shut the lights off. I often wonder why more big leaguers don't treat fans like BP does.

Great story. In addition to being a very fan-friendly guy, he also "gets" social media and uses it in a positive way to interact with fans. I'm very impressed with Brandon.

This is a great point. I've never followed other pro athletes, but I've seen some other tweets from them, and it is all tweets between their friends that just make them sound so dumb (I'm holding back here). All about drinking and night clubs.

He doesn't use it that way, it's more of a way to be in touch with fans. I really like his approach. Even his Cardinals stuff was just fun. No real venom there.

Well, Brett Favre was very fan friendly, especially with phone messages ;)

I met Brandon at the Reds Caravan in Charleston, WV prior to the 2010 season. He was in a bad mood that day for some reason, and I got a bad impression of him. I've watched him closely since, and i assume he just had a bad day. I hope to meet him again under better circumstances.

There was this story as well which I had not heard of until it was linked to over on the Sun Deck. He held a Twitter contest and the girl that won got a free trip to Chicago for her whole family to see the Reds on Brandon and he took them out to dinner, hung out the whole weekend. My favorite part was when he made them all go to Walgreens with him so he could buy milk.

Okay, that was fantastic. I've heard of players buying tickets for people and even paying for a trip to a road game or 2, but good lord...Brandon was spending constant time with them. Going out to dinner, hanging out, just fantastic. Thanks for posting that klw.

I can't even begin to describe how cool that story was.

I gotta say, BP is truly one of the classiest guys in the biz, regardless of what the whiny birds from that city with the arch think.
