The Pittsburgh Pirates select Gerrit Cole, RHP, UCLA, Junior

There wasn't much of a decision to be made here as now the Pirates will have some great pitching prospects in there system with Cole and Jameson Tallion. The only other prospects that could be considered at this pick were Bubba Starling, Anthony Rendon, and Danny Hultzen but I felt those were all a step below Gerrit Cole's caliber.

Cole is as good as any pitching prospect in recent years. He stacks up with the Strasburgs, Taillons and David Prices of the world. Heck, considering the fact that I see him as less of an injury risk at the same stage I'd probably take Cole over Strasburg at the same point in their careers. Cole is a legit 1 or 1A prospect in this, or any, draft class. For me, he'll immediately be one of the 10 best prospects in all of baseball the minute he signs.

The Seattle Mariners select:
Anthony Rendon, 3b Rice
Rendon entered the season as the draft's top-rated prospect and still sits atop our rankings, but his season hasn't gone as planned. After hitting a combined .391/.497/.750 with 46 homers as BA's Freshman of the Year in 2009 and College Player of the Year in 2010, Rendon hit .323/.526/.516 with five homers in the regular season this spring.

The Arizona diamondbacks with pick number 3 select Danny Hultzen, lhp, Virginia
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...1/2611880.html
Baseball America had the Pirates taking with the first pick Danny Hultzen, lhp, Virginia.
The Diamondbacks are happy to pick him at pick 3.
http://www.baseballamerica.com/today...1/2611878.html
Danny Hultzen offers two, maybe three, plus pitches and plus command. Given that it comes from the left side I'll take him in the hopes that he'll zip through the minors and join the major league rotation quickly. I know some question his crossfire delivery, but it's worked for him so far and I'm not inclined to change him.

The Orioles are on the clock
Re: Redszone Mock MLB draft 2011 signup and selection thread.
With the 4th pick in the MLB draft, the Orioles select Trevor Bauer from UCLA.
http://www.hayitsalexis.com/wp-conte...a-baseball.jpg
Bundy was heavily considered here, especially given that his brother is in the organization, but Bauer was given the nod on one key component: workload. Currently, the O's have an extremely young but mostly unreliable staff, and concerns with workload, injuries, and inconsistency will most likely continue to plague them. Bauer had an insane, potentially MLB ready, workload in college, and will possibly have the opportunity to start in AA or even higher. His ceiling rivals that of his teammate Cole as well, and Bauer is a far more proven option. Having a player of his caliber in the rotation could give the O's the bump they need in order to contend in the AL East sooner rather than later.

Who wants to pick for the Royals?
Re: Redszone Mock MLB draft 2011 signup and selection thread.
I'll do the Royals.
With the 5th overall pick of the 2011 MLB amateur draft, the Kansas City Royals select
Bubba Starling, OF/RHP, Gardner Edgerton HS
Re: Redszone Mock MLB draft 2011 signup and selection thread.
With the 6th pick the Washington Nationals Select
Dylan Bundy RHP Owassa HS (Okla) Senior
Bundy entered the spring considered one of the top high school arms in the Draft class, if not the best. And nothing has happened to change that evaluation. If anything, his performance at his Oklahoma high school has improved his standing.
The right-hander has been dominant, featuring three plus to above-average pitches. His fastball is among the best in the Draft, touching 98 mph and sitting at 95 mph. It's got above-average movement to boot. He complements it with two good breaking pitches. He'll throw his curve 75-79 mph and it should be at least an above-average pitch with tight rotation and some bite to it. He's got an 83-85 mph slider which isn't quite as good as the curve now, but has the chance to be in the future. He has a changeup, though it's behind the other pitches. But even that one has the chance to be Major League average.
He does it all with a strong, athletic frame and very good delivery, which should allow him to develop his already good control into excellent overall command of all his pitches. His future potential as a frontline starter had some teams very high up giving him serious consideration. MLB.COM

With the 9th pick the Chicago Cubs select George Springer, OF, University of Connecticut
http://collegebaseball360.com/wp-con.../Springer.jpeg
Springer led the Huskies with a .361 average, 12 homers and 74 RBIs entering this weekend. He also stole 31 bases, to boot. “He’s got big-time power, he hits to all fields and his athleticism is off the charts,” said one National League scout. “He’s the total package.”
