Phillips not thrilled about uncertain future

Phillips and Sheldon talk contract extension and options.

http://cincinnati.reds.mlb.com/news/...s_cin&c_id=cin

Quote:

"I've always said from Day 1 that this is where I want to be at," Phillips said on Friday. "I thought there might be some talks going on during the season but I haven't heard anything all year. I was very disappointed about it. It hurts bad that this is where I want to be at and I've paid blood, sweat and tears for this organization, but the only thing I can do is thank them very much for giving me a second opportunity. I can't really trip about anything that much. I came here and got my career back to where it should be going."
Jocketty's take
Quote:

Jocketty believed there was nothing unusual about the lack of dialogue with Phillips' side about a contract.

"We don't talk about contract negotiations," Jocketty said. "I haven't had a conversation with his agent. I would think at some point between now and the next month or so, we'll probably have a conversation."
BP says he will test free agency if the Reds pick up the option without an extension

Quote:

If the Reds only pick up the option on Phillips without giving him an extension, he plans on becoming a first-time free agent after the 2012 season.

"If they just pick my option up and don't extend me, I feel like that's a slap in my face," Phillips said. "If the team wants you, they will make room. They will show you they want you here, period. They did it for some of the other guys.

"If they're going to have me for just one year, I feel like they don't see me in the future."

I love me a good posture.

BP's future is actually a lead pipe cinch- he's going to be a multi-millionaire, some more.

Cry me a river of tears.

I hope the Reds can keep him, though- he's become one of my favorites over the last couple of years, and plays the best 2nd base I've ever seen.

Yep, this sounds normal to me. BP will get his contract. The sticking point will probably be length. But, I don't think the money will be a problem.

Wah

Branch Rickey trades him this winter.

I'm betting Rickey.

If you really want to be re-signed that bad then have your agent contact the Reds about a contract extension.

And the replacement will be a downgrade.

Reds' ownership/GM = pedestrian. Anything looks good compared to John Allen.

Great to see all these small/medium market teams in baseball succeeding with the minor league model consistently - kinda wondering who those team are...but I guess we can keep fooling ourselves that draft picks and prospects are gonna make a difference more than once every 5-10 years, if you don't spend money.

Of course it will be a downgrade, real question is do you ink him to a contract that you probably don't get equal value for, or take his option and let him play for the next contract. (he might pout, he might play his way out of town) Or do you trade him and let the next team deal with the 30's with Phillips.

Pivotal moment IMO for this franchise

He's risen to top 5, if not higher in MLB 2b production.

Debateable. Zobrist makes the argument tricky, but it could certainly be proposed that if Zobrist had played full time 2nd base this year, he would still be leaps and bounds above BP.

That said, I'm more concerned about his production in 2013 if we are talking extension. Quit while you are ahead.

His D puts him in there.....none of the 5 above him are in the same class. His dropoff in power and speed are a concern....no doubt. In the post-steroid era....he could still rise quickly in value.

He's a 3-win player, tops. You don't pay $12 million for a 3-win player.

D is included in the WAR though.
