George "Snuffy" Stirnweiss won the 1945 AL batting title while most of the "big name" players were off fighting the war (Snuffy was classified 4F due to ulcers and hay fever). He also had 15+ triples in consecutive years, a feat no one accomplisehed again for sixty years, until Jose Reyes managed it. Snuffy died at age 39 in a train wreck.
