Birthdays: 2/6

Reds:

Travis Wood (25) -I think Travis is going to be a fine major league pitcher. I remember him throwing eight perfect innings against the Phillies in his third major league start.

Smoky Burgess -One of my favorite quotes form The Great American Baseball Card Book: "Smoky Burgess was fat. Not just baseball player fat, FAT fat...like the mailman or your Uncle Dwight." Smokey could rake, though.

Others:

Richie Zisk (63) -Former Pirate and White Sox OF- DH.

Dale Long -Offered a contract out of college by the Green Bay Packers, but chose baseball. Homered in eight consecutive games, which I believe might still be the NL record. Primarily a first baseman, but in May of 1952 he became the first lefty-throwing catcher in the majors since Jiggs Donohue in 1902.

Glenn Wright -Nicknamed "Buckshot"; a star shortstop who might have been a superstar if he'd had a longer career. Turned an unassisted triple play in 1925.

Babe Ruth -It's hard to find anything about the Babe that isn't common knowledge. I didn't know that when he was finishing up his playing career and supposedly desperate to get a managing job, he had an appointment for an inteview with Frank Navin about managing the Tigers but failed to show up for the appointment. Never a good idea...

It's also my birthday, so yay me...

Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez turns 26 today. He was the #2 pick overall the year he came out, and he had a wonderful amateur career, but he's got 1200+ major league plate appearances now and it's geting harder and harder to ignore the smell of disappointment that Pirate fans are so used to...

Chico, you probably know this, but you also share birthdays with Ronald Reagan and Tom Brokow.

Have a great one :)
