Birthdays: 2/6
Reds:
Travis Wood (25) -I think Travis is going to be a fine major league pitcher. I remember him throwing eight perfect innings against the Phillies in his third major league start. Smoky Burgess -One of my favorite quotes form The Great American Baseball Card Book: "Smoky Burgess was fat. Not just baseball player fat, FAT fat...like the mailman or your Uncle Dwight." Smokey could rake, though. Others: Richie Zisk (63) -Former Pirate and White Sox OF- DH. Dale Long -Offered a contract out of college by the Green Bay Packers, but chose baseball. Homered in eight consecutive games, which I believe might still be the NL record. Primarily a first baseman, but in May of 1952 he became the first lefty-throwing catcher in the majors since Jiggs Donohue in 1902. Glenn Wright -Nicknamed "Buckshot"; a star shortstop who might have been a superstar if he'd had a longer career. Turned an unassisted triple play in 1925. Babe Ruth -It's hard to find anything about the Babe that isn't common knowledge. I didn't know that when he was finishing up his playing career and supposedly desperate to get a managing job, he had an appointment for an inteview with Frank Navin about managing the Tigers but failed to show up for the appointment. Never a good idea... It's also my birthday, so yay me... |
Happy birthday

Re: Birthdays: 2/6
Pittsburgh's Pedro Alvarez turns 26 today. He was the #2 pick overall the year he came out, and he had a wonderful amateur career, but he's got 1200+ major league plate appearances now and it's geting harder and harder to ignore the smell of disappointment that Pirate fans are so used to...
