A Confederacy of Dunces

"When a true genius appears in the world, you may know him by this sign, that the dunces are all in confederacy against him."

I cannot believe that I only finally stumbled upon this book a couple months ago. Perhaps the funniest book I have ever read. The story of the author is truly a tragedy.

Any other Ignatius Reilly fans out there? :D

I think my favorite book is always changing, but this one is always on the short list. I'm really overdue for a reread.

Yeah, I like the book but it's hard for me to give it a full endorsement, just because the main guy's so despicable. (I get that he's supposed to be.)

That's where I fall in too. Quite the idiosyncratic and picturesque book, but I eventually tired of Ignatius.

Live in Berkeley and you'll know enough of the real thing, way less charming

Ignatius would have loved the internet. Can you imagine the trolling he would have gotten into?

I agree, the Ignatius hate is a little odd to me. I found him endlessly entertaining and interesting. The back and forth with Myrna, eating dozens of hot dogs, trying to bring down Levy Pants, it's endless for me, really.

Me too. He's too powerless to hate.

Too ridiculous to hate for me.

Is there any doubt that Toole would have lived and kept on writing if his work had been properly appreciated before his downward slide into depression and paranoia? It makes me sad to think of all the literature we lost when he took his life.
