The Brandon Phillips thing just topped it off.
He didn't want to use Marshall more than 1 inning with the Cards coming up tomorrow.
The Phillips thing was actually correct, as Phillips would lead off the next inning. It's called a double switch.
He didn't bring Chapman in the middle on the 9-10th inning becuase he was unavailable tonight, especially with the Cards coming up.
BTW, Hoover looked pretty good out there.

I had no problem with Chapman sitting tonight. I get that completely.
But the BP double switch was a bad idea for the reason that it was rolling the dice that we would continue to shut them down. Phillips needs to hit that inning, not another one later.
If that was Marshall's second inning, I will rescind my criticism there. I only remembered him facing two batters, the two lefties in the 8th.
And I liked Hoover out there the first inning. The second inning was asking a bit much, even more so once runners starting getting into scoring position. It was a giant stroke of luck that the game lived on from that inning.

However, Marshall only pitched 2/3 of an inning, therefore I stand by my point. The two lefties. Dusty thinks he is a LOOGY, and that is inexcusable.

I'm not sure where you get the idea Dusty thinks he's only a LOOGY. He's pitched 48 innings this year, and among all relievers in the majors, only five left-handed pitchers have more innings than Marshall. He's gotten his fair share of usage.

Marshall only got 2 outs in the game, he did pitch in two different innings. He got Utley out to end the 7th, Howard out to begin the 8th, then gave up the hit to Brown. He was then replaced by LeCure.

I hate the way Dusty handles Marshall. He's more than just a lefty specialist. I'd much rather prefer Marshall in the game over Sam LeCure. And it's bad enough that Miguel Cairo and Wilson Valdez are still on the roster, but to play them in the same game should be a crime. I'm thrilled to split the series, but man that was disappointing blowing that game.

Not only that, but batting Cairo and Valdez back-to-back didn't help either. We had a runner on 3rd (Ludwick or Bruce) with nobody out in the 6th and Cairo and Valdez do what they do (nothing). Then the much better hitter in Hanigan is intentionally walked to get to Cueto, who K's. Hanigan is one of the better Reds at making contact and, if say, he would have simply been inserted into the lineup between those two black holes, there's a very good possibility that the game never goes to extras. Reds win. 8 games up.
