Possible new names for Hornets. Seriously.

Quote:

Anil V. George, the attorney who typically handles the trademarks involving NBA brand names, filed trademarks on five new potential franchise names on behalf of the New Orleans Hornets NBA Limited Partnership...

The trademarks:

New Orleans Pelicans
New Orleans Rougarou
New Orleans Mosquitos
New Orleans Swamp Dogs
New Orleans Bullsharks
Now, I'm far from an informed NBA fan. I frequently teach at the school where O.J. Mayo graduated, and only today discovered that he plays for the Mavs now. Still, even I see some big problems here.

Particularly with the name "Mosquitos". There might not be anything wrong with it generically, but if you go from "Hornets" to "Mosquitos" (or, if you want to spell it correctly, "Mosquitoes") that can be absolutely nothing but a demotion.

Seriously.

Pelicans is apparently a reference to a classic minor league baseball team, so that one is okay based on that.

The rest can go. Except for Swamp Dogs. I wouldn't mind that, but not for the reasons they would hope for, I'm sure.

The Jazz should do the right thing and give them back the Jazz name.

Louisiana is the Pelican State.

It's like they've decided on Pelicans but came up with a plan to throw in 4 other names that are so hideously awful that the Pelicans looks brilliant by comparison.

I call dibs on New Orleans Swamp Dogs for my next fantasy team.

I can't believe anyone would consider naming a sports team anything that starts with "Bullsh-"

That's just asking for trouble.

I'd heard that Pelicans was a done-deal from friends in NOLA.

Tulane's actual mascot is a pelican as well.

That's what I think too. They and Utah should trade nicknames since Utah is known as the Beehive State.

I personally like the New Orleans Occupying Union Forces with Benjamin Butler as the mascot, but they probably wouldn't go for that.

I'm not much of an NBA fan, but the Hornets have become my favorite team this year after former UD Flyer guard Brian Roberts was signed to the team. He's making significant contributions and has been one of the surprise players of the league so far this season.

They have some good young players. I can see them taking babysteps and making strides such as the Warriors have this year.

Given the recent change in ownership (Tom Benson) what about naming the team The Louisiana Purchase? :D

It's official, apparently.

Report: New Orleans to officially announce name change to Pelicans.

Quote:

The brown Pelican is a common sight on the New Orleans waterfront, it is the state bird of Louisiana and it is even on the state flag. It has local flair.

It is not, however, the most intimidating of creatures. The other names being considered — Pelicans, Rougarou, Mosquitos, Swamp Dogs, and Bullsharks — had some fans but there was by no means a consensus. Plus, Benson already owns the right to Pelicans, which was a minor league baseball team Benson used to own in the area.
