[quote"Usually when teams win the first half, they are dismantled fully," Dismuke said. "We just lost a couple of key ingredients, and now we have to find a way to fill the gaps. These guys will be ready to play."[/quote]
That's because the Reds have largely veteran squads at both AA and AAA. It's the young, prospect-laden teams like Jacksonville (LAD) a year ago that get broken up quickly when they win.
There are a couple of older players at Sarasota they could always bring up, like Jay Garthwaite or Jeremiah Piepkorn or even BJ Szymanski from Dayton. Yeah, I know that none of those three is scaring anyone, but challenge thy hitters. Drew Anderson, who plays mostly 2B (but can also do 3B and the OF) for the S-Reds, is hitting close to .300 and probably deserves a promotion. That's the guy who would best fill the hole.
"It’s Varner’s spot to start out, but I’m going to play that hot hand if someone’s focused or locked in," Owens said. "I keep waiting for Miguel Perez to get hot, so I can give him a shot too."
Keep waiting? Perez has raised his average from the Mendoza Line to about .240. I'm not sure what else Owens wants from the guy.
