Aug 21 .. 20 Yrs Ago Today .. Chris Welsh & Eric Davis Shine In Reds Victory
AUGUST 21, 1986 … Reds’ outfielder Eric Davis knocks in 4 runs with the aid if his 19th and 20th HR’s of the season in the 9-4 win over St. Louis at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium.
Reds’ starting pitcher Chris Welsh picks up his first career stolen base in the sixth-inning when he swipes third base in a double steal with teammate Barry Larkin. Welsh and Larkin score on the play after a throwing error by Cardinals‘ catcher Steve Lake. Apparently, that extra running wears Welsh out. He goes to the mound in the top of the seventh-inning and promptly gives up three consecutive singles before being relieved by Rob Murphy. Welsh is awarded his 5th win of the season after allowing the Redbirds four runs in six innings.

AUGUST 21, 1967 … Reds’ fireballer Jim Maloney no-hits the San Francisco Giants for the final seven innings of his two-hit shutout at Candlestick Park. Ron Herbel picks up the loss for San Francisco. Reds 2, Giants 0.
AUGUST 21, 1971 … Reds’ lefty Jim Merritt wins his first game of the season after winning 20 games for the Reds in 1970. Merritt, trying to overcome an arm problem, relieves starter Wayne Simpson and picks up the win after throwing 5 1/3 innings of shutout relief against the Pirates in Cincinnati. Reds 6, Pirates 3.
AUGUST 21, 1977 … Reds’ ace Tom Seaver makes his first visit to New York’s Shea Stadium since being traded to Cincinnati on June 15th. ‘Tom Terrific’ takes care of his old teammates with an eleven strikeout complete game pitching performance. Seaver has now won seven games and has pitched eight complete games in his twelve starts with Cincinnati.
AUGUST 21, 1990 … Reds’ outfielder Billy Hatcher cracks four doubles and Rick Mahler throws seven solid innings of five-hit pitching to beat the Cubs at Riverfront Stadium, 8-1. Reds’ manager Lou Piniella has a problem with the umpiring in the 5th inning and throws the first base bag into short right field. Piniella goes after the bag and tosses it a second time.

AUGUST 21, 1908 … Washington catcher Gabby Street earns $500 for his part in a stunt at the Washington Monument. It takes thirteen tries but Street is finally able to catch a baseball dropped from the top of the 555-foot high monument. Scientists estimate that a ball dropping that far has the force of 200-300 pounds. Later that day, Street catches Walter ‘The Big Train’ Johnson’s 3-1 win over Detroit.
AUGUST 21, 1931 … Yankees’ star Babe Ruth becomes the first major league player to hit 600 career homers as New York defeats the St. Louis Browns, 11-7.
AUGUST 21, 1968 … Aging Yankee’s star Mickey Mantle comes off the bench in the ninth-inning and belts a pinch-hit HR to rob Twins’ lefty Jim Merritt of a shutout. Mantle’s HR is his sixteenth of the year and the 534th of his career, tying him with Jimmie Foxx for third-place on the all-time HR list.
