Kyle Lohse is not an ace, but he is also not the bum that everyone claimed he was immediately after the trade. Lohse was horrible in April and was limited to spot duty for the next two months. His recent hot streak is nothing more than a return to his career norms. Even after two months of lights out pitching, his 2006 ERA is still about three-quarters of a point higher than his 4.79 career mark.
Lohse is a solid innings-eater to throw into the back of a rotation. If he can ever harness his talent and be a little more consistent, he might even develop into a decent mid-rotation guy. He was certainly worth taking a flier on, especially when you consider the pricetag was just one overaged low-A pitching prospect.
