great article, woy, and as a very amateur baseball historian, the Alex Johnson angle is very interesting to me. I think the "scene of epic proportions" you refer to was when Chico Ruiz pulled a gun on Johnson, and Johnson was the one suspended. This happened in 1971, when both were playing for the Angels.
They had some history together, as both played for the Reds in 1968-69. Despite the gun incident, Ruiz was a popular player (although a utility infielder) with a great sense of humor.
He came up with such classics as: "Bench me or trade me," and my personal favorite: "I can't wait for the season to start so I can get some rest!"
Ruiz was killed in an automobile accident in 1972, just prior to spring training, and among those who came to pay their respect was...Alex Johnson.
Here's a great tribute to Ruiz: http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/hi...006/060822.htm
