Here's a quick story about him, I might have told before:
I used to work with the Dragons in customer service/ticketing and other areas. One night I was working in the Party Deck and there was a handicapped child and his younger brother with him at their first baseball game ever. It started to pour before the game started and around 8:30 it got cancelled. The family had waited out the rain for over an hour and a half, hoping to get a glimpse of their first baseball game. The kids started to cry, and being a die hard baseball enthusiast, I felt their pain. I went down to the field level, hoping I could just get a couple baseballs for them. Votto was the closest one when I got down there, so I asked if he could grab a couple baseballs for the kids. He came back with two baseballs, borrowed a pen from a kid in the stands, and signed both baseballs for the kids. I didn't even ask him to sign them, but he knew it would be special. The kids almost lost it when they saw the baseballs and the parents were thrilled. I know there are two young kids that are big Joey Votto fans, and I promised them he would make it to the big leagues in a few years. I've been anticipating his arrival for many reasons, but one is to keep my promise to those kids. He's just a good dude (period).
This may come across as smug flag waving crap. Canadian kids seem to be very level headed and down to earth and every day I smile and am proud to watch and read of about Joey's success and hope to see him soon be a star with our beloved Reds.
