well i disagree. He had better success than Dusty, longer service time as a manager and a stint as GM with the Padres. He may not have been Davey Johnson big, but he was bigger than Lou when Lou was hired.
He was fired in K.C. had a short stint in OAK and a few years in S.D. Not once did he make the playoffs. He had a reputation as a good GM but he was hardly a name as a manager. And, to be fair, Lou wasn't that big of a name at the time either. He was Yankees manager for a time but who wasn't? His rep at the time was more as a player than as a manager.
