If the Reds outright cut Stanton right now - which they should do - then they would owe him his $3 million salary for 2008 plus his 2009 buyout of $500k. The terms of that contract would then be satisfied in full and Stanton would be a free agent.
If some other team such as the Cardinals were stupid enough to sign Stanton, then they would write a new contract for their agreed upon terms.
