If the Reds cut Stanton right now, they'd pay him his guaranteed money ($3.5 mil, including 2009 buyout) and immediately cut all ties with him. If Stanton ever plays baseball again, then he would become his new team's problem for 2009.
I think that's how it works if he passes through waivers.
I'm pretty sure that if another team claims him off waivers then they would be on the hook for the buyout and the option and the Reds would be out his 2008 salary less the major league minimum.
