The brief explanation of BABIP was a bit too brief. There have been subsequent studies showing that despite the occasional wild variation, "good" pitchers (high k/9, low ERA) tend to put up low BABIP throughout their careers. Kind of like how "good" hitters tend to have high batting averages throughout their careers, even though they may only hit .280 one season.
It's not all random.
