Coffey has great stuff and most of the time dominates the hitter. However, every 20 pitches or so, he throws up a big terd and it gets clobbered. That explains why his peripherals are pretty good and don't match up with his overall performance. He throws 20 great pitches, then a big gopher ball.

I personally think that is the major distinction between mediocre pitchers and great pitchers. Great ones almost never throw a terd, maybe one a game. Pitchers like Coffey throw them up at a much higher rate, more like one or two an inning.
