I think the players want it that way because it gets them more money up front in the form of a signing bonus. NFL careers are notoriously short and players are notoriously short-sighted. Upshaw has been trying for years to get players to put more money away for the future and they keep taking the up-front money. I suppose it's smart in a way. Get it now and invest it wisely and they could be set for life. It's just like lottery winners are encouraged to take the lesser payout now because they'd get more in the long run by investing that rather than taking deferred payments in future dollars, which are less valuable.
Unfortunately for a lot of NFL players, they spend all their money now and end up hard luck cases complaining that the NFLPA doesn't take care of them later. I think the players and owners are getting ready to take the NFL down a few notches in popularity. They see those golden eggs coming out of the goose and want to cut the goose open to get more.
