It's so hard to compare contemporary players with the players in the wooden raquet era. McEnroe, Borg, Connors, Cash, Wilander were not the musclebound athletes that many of todays players have become.
It was more of a speed and accuracy game back then. You had to hit numerous shots, you had to paint the lines and you had to be able to run and move for hours. They weren't serving 150 mph. Federer is a throwback in that sense, as he has a very diverse game.
