It would probably be an issued, but 25 or 30 years ago, hockey players didn't wear helmets and what, 50 or 60 years ago batters didn't wear helmets in baseball. Those changes eventually came, so another one would probably work out, even if not very quickly.
It took a death in NASCAR to force safety changes there, it took a massive head injury to force base coaches to wear helmets.
It'll probably take someone prominent getting skulled and sidelined for something like this to take hold.
Also - baseball forces hitters to wear a flapped helmet in the unlikely but occasional event that a ball goes in a guys earhole. And he knows its coming.
The average exit velocity off a wood bat is somewhere in the mid 90s - and a pitcher could potentially (depending on his landing point) be scarily exposed to a mid 90s fastball to the head.
And no one calls hitters wusses because they now wear helmets.
