If it looks certain that Votto is going to test the market, you can either trade him, or put Yonder on the bench for a season to take over in 4 years. If it looks like votto will be willing to resign, then you can move Yonder then. Seems like a nice insurance policy on the free agent aspirations and potential free agent worth of Votto.
If you have less than five years in the minors and are out of options you get a fourth option year.
