I'll agree with others that I'm not sure at this point I'd want to extend the contract beyond 2012. But as for 2012 -- well, if Phillips is traded to save money, we'd better be sure there's something to spend the money on that will make the team a lot better, because second base would get considerably worse. I believe Phillips is kind of taken for granted around here sometimes; he's a top-ten-in-MLB second baseman both at bat and in the field, and that's not an easy combo to find. At this point, FanGraphs has him headed for a near-5 WAR season.
