Fortunately, his last baseball words to me were from reading one of the books we gave him of interviews with players from the 40's and 50's. He said to me, "Do you remember 'old so & so' ?" [name is elusing me]. He said the toughest batter he ever face was Stan Musial, the toughest pitcher, Ewell Blackwell. He then recounted Blackwell's pitching style and we chatted about that. We butted heads, but we both loved baseball. I'm guessing he's at peace with the Brantley trade now - and Brandon Phillips.
"Since I've been with the Reds in 1989, we've never had a farm system this loaded," Bowden said. "If we were the New York Yankees and had unlimited dollars, we could have traded for Colon, (Jeff) Weaver, Rolen, (Cliff) Floyd, (Kenny) Rogers and Finley and gotten them all -- and still held onto our top five prospects. That's an amazing statement."
