He wouldn't burn an option next year if he's not added to the 40-man roster this year. He has another year before he is exposed to the Rule 5 draft, so if the Reds don't call him up this year, they could keep him in the minors to start next season and not use an option. The only time an option is used is if you spend at least 20 days in the minors when you're on the 40-man roster.
The only thing that would happen if the Reds call him up this year is that he'd have his 3-year option clock begin, which means they have 3 calendar years left from the time he reports until they have to expose him to waivers before optioning him.
