Some guys can get away with being impatient and swinging early and often. So far in his career, Heisey hasn't.
He's hot now, great, but learning to take a few pitches wouldn't kill him.
It's not a fundamental. Fundamentals for hitting are balance, footwork, arm positioning, handling of the bat, etc.
Being selective or not is a style. It's not a fundamental. The BABIP is not statistically any different on the first pitch than it is the fifth pitch. If a guy feels more comfortable hitting on the first pitch, then they should do so provided they're not hacking at just anything.
There is no magical formula to success as a hitter. You can achieve it in a variety of ways.
