The pressure of managing and the rigors of traveling have taken their toll on Dusty. This "scare" may have been the wake up call that baseball just is not all that important. He has a young son and a family that I'm sure he'd rather be around.
Getting off of planes at 3AM, a train wreck of sleep patterns, answering the same questions everyday to media, trying to win in the big leagues, it just goes on and on. There is a reason that they call it the "grind."
LaRussa was smart enough to go. Leyland will not be far behind. Cox had enough and so did Gaston. Even Francona realized he needed a break. Sometimes it's just not all it's cracked up to be.
It's absolutely pathetic that people can't have an opinion from actually watching games and supplementing that with stats. If you voice an opinion that doesn't fit into a black/white box you will get completely misrepresented and basically called a tobacco chewing traditionalist...
