Firstly, it should be noted that KGJ was 39-40 when that picture was taken, and secondly he was a power hitter. This is important, because I believe you would be very hard pressed to find a power hitter nearing 40 in better shape than that. The guys that can do that are anatomical miracles or on steroids. Sure, when Griffey was 25, I'm sure the gains he could make in the weight room were indicative of other-worldy athleticism, but time waits for no man.
Mays never got that fat when he was 40. Neither did Musial, Ted Williams, McCovey, Mike Schmidt, or countless other aging power hitters.
