Re: Minor-League Player of the Day
Thursday, 5-2: Yohan Pino, Louisville. Summoned when Armando Galarraga, coming off the DL, was hit on the leg by a line drive and lifted after 2/3 of an inning, Pino came up big in the Bats' 4-1 victory . . . 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K.
The 29-year-old righty, a native of Venezuela, spent last year as a starter in the Toronto organization. He pitched respectably in Double-A, but in a brief spin at Las Vegas (PCL), he surrendered 29 hits over 9.1 IP. It's been a different story this year for Pensacola--where he was unscored upon in 11 innings--and now Louisville, his 11th minor-league team since he signed with Minnesota in 2005. Pino has started one game for each club and generally been used as a swingman, working mostly in long relief. For the season, he sports an 0.70 ERA over 25.2 IP. Nice pickup.
